I’ve noticed the same for a wind shift to from when the first hour of light it’s calm and the thermals are still dropping then right around the same time the thermals flip the wind gradually starts picking up those bucks will make a small to medium movement at that time to go into their mid day afternoon bed.

IMO it’s better to just take a day off to rest if you aren’t physically or mentally there because it’s better to not be in the woods when that monster walks by then to have him walk by and catch you off guard and you screw it up. Had that happen last year hunting on the ground in a creek bottom fell asleep woke up to 2 does 15yds from me and it literally made me jump when I seen them and they busted me well the worse part about it was that a monster 8/10pt was right behind them and I didn’t know it tell it was to late. 😅

Very similar to what I’ve found that works for us. Last trip I lost 11 pounds, but never got sick, just felt great because of excellent food choices and exercise. I start my morning off with coffee and mct oil, hot chocolate for my son, then when the code is finished a Greenbelly Meal bar, which can be 500-600+ calories first thing. Then throughout the day I have 150-250 calorie snacks consisting of various RxBar flavors, the Fatty meat sticks, Jocko Hydate packs, EmergenC+ drink mix, various Justins nut butters & butter cups, organic corn chips, a roasted nit mix of macadamia, pecan, walnut and cashew, a protein bar, then close the day out with a hot meal of Peak Refuel entrees, and the day of low calorie meals like breakfast skillet and 3 bean chilli Mac, I add the peach or mountain berry cobbler to make up for it and provide some dessert delight. I still keep up on my multivitamins, creatine, CBD, joint warfare and testosterone optimizer since I’m getting old. All of this provides for about 3500 calories in a vacuum sealed bag.

Oh, and don’t forget to make some mountain taquito’s. Think cut pork belly (fried). Coat a tortilla in peanut butter, sprinkle some salted caramel mct powder in there and wrap the pork belly like a taquito. Place them in a snack baggie and pull them out as you go.

Good stuff. Do you do a lot of practice runs to nail down your approach in to the stand after you find a spot to hunt? I’m really curious about the morning hunts when you have to rely on flashlights vs afternoon hunts where you can keep eyes peeled for spooking deer. Me personally I like to turn my tracker on for my walk out after scouting and keeping my “walk in” as my focus when exiting.

    • @BeauMartonik

I typically run my track on Spartan Forge on the way out like you said, plan it out on the map, or for a rut spot like this, I will go in right at daylight and hunt my way in. It would be nice to get practice runs, but they don't always happen. Thanks for watching!

Jeff Sturgis explained this quite well I think He calls those bucks long distance cruisers. He thinks the mature bucks already know where the does are and when they're receptive, vs the younger bucks that are bird dogging through the woods trying to find something to chase. By the end of that first week - 10 days in November, the younger bucks don't have the stamina or knowledge to keep going. Those big bucks that are bigger, stronger, and smarter, have the energy and knowledge to efficiently move those really long distances in that second week looking for the last of the receptive does. He shot a really solid buck in Ohio doing this. I believe he was on a super long bench movement in the 3rd week of November (equivalent to the 2nd week for us in PA) and caught him going between 2 clear cuts miles apart - Caleb
